Have you met the Muffin Man who lives on Bukit Merah Lane?

Each time I’m about to bake or eat muffins, I replay the scene from Shrek when Gingy asks about the Muffin Man. Since then, the hunt for ridiculously good muffins has always been on my mind.I get disappointed a lot when the cafes I frequent serve bad muffins. Good coffee, yes, but you need a good muffin to accompany that hot cuppa! Thankfully, the search ended when AJ Delights, run by Amy and Jerry, approached us with their deliciously handmade muffins.

Glorious oh Glorious Muffins

Discovering the Muffin Man or the Muffin Woman

Located at Bukit Merah in the nondescript Alexandra Food Village, AJ Delights serves up seventeen flavours of muffins. From the usual favourites such as Banana Chocolate Chip, to a more adventurous Raspberry Streusel muffin. Here’s the whole complete list. Where else in Singapore can you find such an exhaustive list of flavours (and halal-certified) right??

Presenting their 18 types of Muffins:

1. Chocolate Hazelnut

2. Cookies & Cream

3. Walnut Banana Vanilla

4. Double Chocolate

5. Walnut Streusel Double Chocolate

6. Bluberry Streusel

7. Apricot Cranberry

8. Almond Walnut Double Chocolate

9. Green Tea Original

10. Green Tea Monster

11. Apple Streusel

12. Walnut Banana

13. Mocha Walnut

14. Raspberry Streusel

15. Double Joy

16. Chocolate Orange

17. Vanilla Streusel

The beautifully chunky muffin tops are indeed crispy, especially those with streusel toppings (streusel is that lovely crumbly topping of flour, butter, and sugar that is baked on top of muffins, breads, pies, and cakes). You might want to save the muffin tops for the last, and please, do not even think of sharing the muffin. Wonderfully airy, soft and flavoured well, muffins from AJ Delight completes your palette with a hint of saltiness so you won’t be overwhelmed with the sugar.

My Most Memorable Favourites

We’re loving the muffins with the streusel topping simply because the added crunch makes the muffin texture a little more interesting. Amongst our favourites were the Blueberry, Vanilla as well as Mocha Walnut muffins. The chocolate muffins will definitely be fought over, and I personally love the double chocolate muffin as it was decadent, rich, yet soft and pillow-like. But of course, what is a muffin without nuts, am I right? Almost every other muffin flavour is topped with a variety of nuts ranging from walnut, hazelnut and almonds. If you’re thinking of a lighter breakfast muffin, the apricot cranberry muffin is perfect for early mornings when you’re in a rush for work.

Q&A: Does milk need to be from a halal-certified source?

Question from reader Zahira: Salam sis, I attended your reading the labels class and found it to be really useful and knowledgeable. I have some questions if you don't mind. If the ingredient is milk (e.g. goat's milk, cow's milk), does it need to be from a halal source or just milk in general is fine? I've attached a copy of the ingredient list and logo for your reference. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks, Zahira
