I was today years old when I learnt that the ‘Padang’ in Nasi Padang refers to the town ‘Padang’ in Indonesia. So, Nasi Padang is more accurately referred to as Indonesian food, than Malay food.
As a food reviewer in my 4th year of my career, this is embarrassing to admit 😅 but I’m ever thankful to the experts that teach me.
Today’s heritage lesson on Minang food brought to me by Putra Minang I learnt about location origins of the food to how the minang kabau people attained their names. One of my favourite parts of my job – learning food heritage. 🌹
I had a really interesting visit to Putra Minang brand new outlet at Bencoolen and it all started when Pak Ali from Putra Minang shared with us about Minangkabau heritage.
This new outlet is accessible by train; just take the Downtown line to Bencoolen MRT and it’s a short walk from there. Find Somerset@Bencoolen and Masjid Bencoolen for your bearings!
Putra Minang has so many dishes and out of all that I tried, the asam pedas is mind-blowing #ravingreviews This one tastes like how my mom would cook it. The satay padang has a strong savoury, umami flavour. It’s tougher than the usual satay but the sauce is like beef broth. Really good, really unique. The belado is… legit. 😍 #ravingreviews
Other than the good food, I appreciate the comfortable ambience of the restaurant. 💯 It’s air-conditioned too so if you’re sweating from the spice, the setting can cold you down hahaha.
Bring your family here to eat! Especially your parents. I think parents who really like their Malay/Indonesian food will enjoy themselves here. From the wide selection of food available to the comfort of the restaurant and even its accessibility, Putra Minang is worth trying.
